Arrow Heads in the Eads Museum

The Eads Museum is located on Main Street just one block north of Colorado Highway 287. The building was originally constructed as a bank. The bank failed prior to the great depression. The collection includes historic photographs, dolls, an organ and early century kitchen furnishings. It is open through the summer from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Great Plains Reservoirs
Boat Docks at Neegronda Reservoir

The Great Plains Reservoirs are four naturally occurring lakes that lie on the Kiowa/Prowers County line in southeast Colorado. The natural depressions are fed by water from the Arkansas river via the Fort Lyon and Kicking Bird Canals. Water is maintained in the lakes as stored irrigation water which later supports agriculture under the Amity Canal system in Prowers County.

The lakes provide an excellent warm water fishery. Fishing tournaments are held yearly for both Bass and Walleye. The lakes also provide important habitat for the ducks and geese (Canadian and Snow Geese) that fly the High Plains Central Flyway. The Piping Plover and Least Tern are two of the less common birds that have recently begun to nest on the shores of these lakes.

Access to both Neegronda and Neenoshe Reservoirs is maintained by Kiowa County. Boat launching facilities are available for both lakes via State Highway 287.

Woelk Park and Museum
Sunny Ridge School House

Woelk Park and Museum is maintained privately by Clarence Woelk of Sheridan Lake Colorado. The roadside park is on the eastern edge of Sheridan Lake and provides a pleasant stopping place for travelers. Facilities include grass picnic tables and a restroom facility (i.e. an outhouse). It is a popular stopping spot for bicyclists who are traveling cross country on U.S. Highway 96. There is plenty of space to park and pitch your tent.

While there, be sure to find Clarence for access to the one-room school houses that he has saved from destruction. They include the Sunny Ridge School (restored) and the Water Valley School, which is in the process of being restored. Clarence has also acquired the Brandon Post Office that was closed just a couple of years ago. It has been moved to the park and provides insight into rural mail deliver in this sparsely populated region. Farm and railroad machinery are part of the collection.
